The chemistry of diabetes is discussed. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are autoimmune diseases and we're now learning about the specific chemicals that lead to this state. Leaky membranes and hyperacidity explain much of why diabetes develops. High levels of sugar are toxic to body proteins. High insulin levels and metabolic syndrome are also reviewed.

Use of proton pump inhibitors such as Prilosec, Nexium, Protonix, Aciphex and others were associated with a 320% increase in C. diff enterocolitis after just 30 days of treatment. PPIs block the absorption of calcium, magnesium, iron and B12 and increase the risk for osteoporosis, senile dementia, and cardiac rhythm disturbances as well.

Cancer is a disease of lack of energy production. It is associated with loss of mitochondrial ATP production caused by oxidative stress. Antioxidants are the antidote to cancer development. This is why we sometimes see success with IV vitamin C treatment. Caveolin 1 is a marker that predicts survival. The question then is would it be worthwhile to treat with...

A study published in Annals of Surgery in April of 2012 showed that bile, not acid, is the cause for Barrett's esophagus and esophageal cancer. This finding is especially important because current drug therapies for GERD focus largely on acid control. Drugs that block acid production might actually make the risk for esophageal cancer higher.

A study published in the journal, Pediatrics, in January of 2012 concluded that adding essential fatty acids could treat children with ADD and ADHD. It went on to state that adopting a healthy dietary pattern that includes fish, vegetables, fruit, legumes, and whole grains is a good idea because most kids with ADD and ADHD consume a diet high in fast...

Many of our seniors having surgery suffer cognitive loss and the question that often comes up is does the anesthesia or surgery itself cause the problem. An article published in the September issue of Annals of Surgery compared the effect of anesthesia alone vs anesthesia plus surgery and showed that in fact the surgery itself is the most potent in...

An epidemiological study comparing overweight to normal weight people showed that normal weight people eat more whole milk products. Perhaps overweight people eat more low fat food but still eat more food. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), however, which is found in cow milk and meat in higher concentrations when they are grass fed, may be a factor that speeds...

Lithocholic acid (LCA) is a liver bile acid that has the ability to selectively kill cancer cells while not affecting normal cells. It works by causing cancer cell mitochondria to self-destruct. LCA also activates the vitamin D receptor site. It prevents whole tumor growth and slows down the development of metastases. In tests it has been shown to...

A study published in Arthritis and Rheumatism in September of 2012 showed that people with gout who ate cherries for two days had a 35% lower risk for developing acute gout compared to those not eating cherries. When consumed while on allopurinol the risk was lowered 75%. Cherry products lower uric acid, which is the end waste product of purine metabolism....

We all have pain from time to time and we want relief as soon as possible. The problem is that relieving pain with pharmaceutical drugs has side effects that are not minor, especially in the case of NSAIDs such as Advil, Aleve, Motrin, and Celebrex. There are about 30,000 deaths annually in the US from NSAIDs and more than 300,000 admissions to hospitals...

Chronic stress can make us dependent on a chronic adrenalin response. Change your diet to high quality carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Eventually this leads to adrenal failure and the need to rebuild the adrenal glands. Many important nutrients become deficient and we cannot make our neurotransmitters and we crash.

Free-form Essential Amino Acids
Amino acids play central roles both as building blocks of proteins and as intermediates in metabolism. The precise amino acid content, and the sequence of those amino acids, of a specific protein, determines the biological activity of the protein. Proteins not only catalyze all (or most) of the reactions in living...
