Use of proton pump inhibitors such as Prilosec, Nexium, Protonix, Aciphex and others were associated with a 320% increase in C. diff enterocolitis after just 30 days of treatment. A natural defense mechanism used by cells in the gut neutralizes toxins generated by the C. Diff microorganism. The toxin produced requires multiple stages to become activated and this can be blocked by stopping this effect. Cysteine protease is the enzyme that can do this and researchers are hoping to discover how to stop this process in clinical practice.

Appreciation of disciplines other than mainstream medicine broadens the scope of care and deepens the options. Healing Circles are a classic example of integrative health care. There is enough disease to go around, but there are too few solutions. No discipline has solved the epidemic of chronic diseases. Maybe we should work together!

The microflora of the GI tract is an organ at the interface of the internal and external milieu that helps us adapt to the environment in which we live. We can modify the kinds of microflora in the gut to regulate immunity, metabolic processes, risk for gut infections, C diff and candida infections, and now even the tendency to get type 2 diabetes and fatty liver....

An article in Nature Medicine in March of 2012 showed that changes in the commensal microbes in the gut or antibiotic treatment predispose people to systemic allergic diseases. Health care reform needs to be centered on health care, not disease care. We need political reform too; reform that is not beseiged by conflicts of interest. Universal health care is off the table, and now single payer is being considered. Compromising with insurance companies is not a reasonable solution because it does not take into account the skyrocketing...
