A study on animals published in the March issue of the Public Library of Science showed that many environmental toxins can have negative effects for three generations! The DNA sequence is unaffected but these compounds change the way genes turn on and off. Some of the toxins involved include pesticides such as DEET and permethrin, fungicides, jet fuel,...

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) reviewed data about possible environmental risks for developing breast cancer. They felt that pesticides, beauty products, heousehold chemicals, and plastics might or might not be risk factors for breasts cancer. They did agree that medical x-rays were a clear risk for developing breast cancer. They recommended that...

Genes in cells are influenced and controlled by the environment in which it lives. This means that DNA is not immutable. Our perception of how we see the world influences our genetic makeup. We are actually the masters of our biology because what we think affects how our genes effect our biology. Even identical twins have different gene readouts that become more...

Stem cells accumulate in skeletal muscle following exercise and release growth factors to spur regeneration according to a study published in PLoS online. Stem cells become deficient with aging so exercise is the best way to preserve muscle as we age.

Physical exercise can change the DNA in certain genes that stimulate obesity and lessen their effects by about 30%. Epigenetics has a lot to do with how the DNA in our genes manifests itself. This challenges the widely held belief that what is in our DNA is not changeable...thank goodness that this is not true.
We have found the same epigenetic...

An article published in FASEB Journal showed that obesity in fathers changed the DNA in their sperm so as to put future generations at risk for obesity and type 2 diabetes even if they consumed a healthy diet. This change developed whether or not the obese father had signs of type 2 diabetes or the metabolic syndrome.
We've long known that...

An article published in the journal, Blood, reported that a compound from fish oil targeted and killed stem cells of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) in mice. They were completely cured of CML and with no relapse with a daily injection for just one week! The compound stimulated the p53 tumor suppressor gene that regulates the response to DNA damage...

According to editorials in August of 2012 from Sayer Ji of GreenMedInfo, and Elizabeth Renter of NaturalSociety, it has been estimated that less than 1% of all diseases are caused by flawed genes! Because the influence of our environment on genes (epigenetics) usually determines the expression of our genes, our lifestyle becomes very important...

An article in Annals of Neurology in February of 2012 showed that in mice the anesthetic Forane caused impaired cognitive function that were much like the changes in Alzheimer's disease. Previous studies have documented that patients undergoing general anesthesia may increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Transient cognitive dysfunction...

We cannot be healthy if we don't live a healthy lifestyle. If all of our cells are healthy, infact, it is impossible to be sick! So, our job is to keep our cells healthy by living a healthy lifestyle that includes diet, exercise, sleep, stress reduction, proper weight, and having meaningful purpose in our lives. If we follow these principles,...

Scientists have found thirteen new gene variants that can increase a person's chance of developing heart disease. One of the benefits would be the ability to identify people carrying this gene and neutralize the excess risk. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cardio vascular disease, one of the largest killers in the...

GMO foods are dangerous and should be outlawed immediately. Longterm studies in mice show a high incidence of breast cancer as well as serious kidney and liver disorders. The problem with the research done by Monsanto and DuPont that has been done is that they are all relatively short term and it takes many years for disease to develop when caused...

Genetically engineered foods and animals are now widespread in supermarkets. We are swapping genes between the animal and plant kingdom with reckless abandon. Their safety is untested and we're conducting a global experiment that is risky. Novel changes created by modifying genes has advantages but also consequences. It also has potential impacts on the environment...

A study from the Mayo Clinic published in the PloS ONE in June of 2012 showed that the gut microflora regulate the immune system and may be directly related to autoimmune disorders such as ulcerative colitis, and diabetes. In fact, the gut microbiome may be used as a biomarker for this predisposition and it may be possible to prevent autoimmune diseases...

Bringing the wisdom of different practitioners together creates a healing environment. There is tenacity towards life in every cell without which no medical intervention could work. Mother Nature is a combination between the cooperation of billions of cells in the human body with the environment. Medical lpractitiobners can help some patients, but they can harm...

Iron balance is critical. Too little and kids will be retarded, and too much and we age prematurely. About five percent of the population has the recessive gene for iron overload. Iron metabolism should be a routine assessment.

Using a combination of hypnosis and local anesthesia can aid in healing and reduce drug use and time spent in the hospital. It could also help avoid cancer recurrences and metastases. Two clinical studies showed these results.
It appears that hypnosis works by reducing the perception of pain as suggested by functional MRI studies and PET scans.
