Lack of sleep leads to a rise in cortisol and insulin resistance, which leads to the development of type 2 diabetes. We know that just missing one night's sleep can increase insulin resistance and if we miss a week of sleep most of us develop type 2 diabetes. Lack of sleep also leads to leptin resistance and nocturnal feeding.

Older adults with insomnia have an altered immune response to stress that increases levels of interlukin 6 up to 4 fold, which may increase the risk of illness and death. In this study that was published in February of 2012 in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, there were 83 people with an average age of 61. Twenty seven percent were poor...

A good night's sleep is absolutely essential for good health and most of us need between 7-8 hours every night. Lack of sleep leads to a state of inflammation and high levels of stress hormones that lead to a wide range of diseases that include type 2 diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, heart attacks, strokes, cancer, obesity and much more. It...

Commensal bacteria in the human intestine produce a neurotransmitter called GABA that may play a role in preventing or treating inflammatory bowel disease. Bifidobacter dentium produces large amounts of GABA that regulates pain and inflammation. GABA may reduce pain and inflammation by stimulating the GABA receptor sites on nerve cells in the brain...

Metal on metal hip prostheses are made of titanium, chromium, and cobalt. When they wear out they release chromium and cobalt into the local tissues, but also into the circulation. Metallosis can result and sometimes leads to tremendous inflammation. The orthopedic community does not yet accept this entity, yet 93,000 DePuy hip prostheses are being recalled....

Overuse injuries such as achilles tendonitis heals twice as fast when using a low level laser therapy (this is the same as infrared light therapy or photonic stimulation). Studies published in the journal Sports Medicine report this. NASA studies show that the light penetrates about 10 inches and speeds up healing by about 50%. This light works by reducing inflammation,...

Lowering cholesterol is not directly correlated to stopping arteriosclerosis and extending life. Inflammation is the cause and should be the primary target. Statins have serious side effects but have value in some people. Berberine causes more cholesterol receptor to form that bind with cholesterol and thereby lower its levels.

Dr. Joe focuses on reversing arteriosclerosis and discusses the role of L-arginine, cholesterol, arterial stiffness and heart rate variability in this process. Measuring inflammation is highlighted.

The February issue of Science Translational Medicine reported that at the cellular level, massage reduces inflammation and promotes the growth of new mitochondria! Researchers analyzed muscle biopsies from both quadriceps before exercising to exhaustion on a treadmill, immediately after 10 minutes of massage, and after a 2.5 hour recovery period. Massage...

Raymond Francis wrote the book, Never Be Fat Again, and explains why being overweight is a symptom, not a cause for this disease. Much of the cause of obesity is related to inflammation in the body caused by an unhealthy lifestyle that includes a poor diet, lack of exercise and sleep, too much stress, and exposure to environmental chemicals. There is a lot...

Infrared light therapy increases circulation, speeds up healing by 50% according to NASA studies, increases lymphatic drainage, adds energy to the mitochondria, and calms down pain fibers. Treatment can be monitored in real time as it is delivered by the use of an infrared scanner, which is recommended. Many conditions are treatable with infrared light therapy.

The first step in considering treatment is to make an accurate diagnosis. The body heals itself and we need to support it to promote healing by looking at a wide range of therapies that range from nutrition to surgery. Lifestyle medicine is the first place to start. Having flexibility in choosing a treatment is key to finding the best treatment.

Research from the University of London published in the Journal of Neuroscience showed that omega-3 fatty acids can protect nerves from injury and help them regenerate. Researchers found that mice recovered from sciatic nerve injury more quickly and more fully and that muscles were less likely to waste if they had high levels of omega 3 fatty acids.
