The chemistry of diabetes is discussed. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are autoimmune diseases and we're now learning about the specific chemicals that lead to this state. When we're young we handle carbohydrates better than when we're older. However, excessive carbohydrate intake even in childhood is a bad idea. The risk for metabolic syndrome goes up proportionately as we consume more carbs, especially simple sugars.

A French study on 66,000 middle aged women over 14 years that was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in February of 2013, showed that drinking 12 oz per week of a diet soda increased the risk for type 2 diabetes by 33%.
