Physical, emotional, and sexual abuse occur in 10-25% of kids and often leads to PTSD that is long term and resistant to treatment. Balancing neurotransmitters is treating symptoms not the cause. Avoidable readmissions to hospitalization is only one way of measuring quality of hospital care. An article published in the May of 2012 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that people with variation in certain obesity genes tend to eat more meals and snacks, consume more calories, and often choose high fat, sugary foods. PTSD often leads to prolonged cortisol levels that eventually can lead to adrenal failure and low cortisol levels. Severe physical and emotional traumas lead to serious psychological problems such as flashbacks, panic attacks, insomnia, phobias, etc. At times these symptoms can be subclinical.

PTSD in the military is severely underappreciated and undertreated by the government. Many of our homeless are our vets who have untreated PTSD. PTSD is also very common in the US. By using a combination of psychotherapy with other modalities of treatment can be very effective.
