With too little or too much iron the end result is a disaster. Iron deficiency in pregnancy causes mental retardation and iron excess in adults predisposes to premature aging. Five percent of the population has the gene for iron overload.

Iron balance is critical. Too little and kids will be retarded, and too much and we age prematurely. About five percent of the population has the recessive gene for iron overload. Iron metabolism should be a routine assessment.

Iron overload in the body leads to accelerated aging through oxidative stress. Five percent of the population has the recessive gene for this problem. The mechanisms of this process are reviewed and treatment discussed.
