There are an enormous number of causes for headaches that include caffeine withdrawl, migraine, TMJ, stress, muscle contraction, and other vascular-related causes. Treating the cause is important, but most of the time our doctors are delighted when they can treat the pain successfully. NSAIDS are often used but they are not safe. There are many other approaches...

Surgery is not the first approach to consider most of the time for herniated discs as much of the time they spontaneouly heal. The pros and cons of the various styles of treatment are discussed. In a large study the outcomes of surgery vs physical therapy and exercise were identical. Integrative therapies are reviewed.

A study of 351 patients over age 45 with knee pain, cartilage tear, and knee osteoarthritis were treated with arthroscopy or physical therapy and evaluated after 6 and 12 months. One third of the physical therapy group elected for arthroscopic surgery but the remainder of the group did as well at 12 months as those getting arthroscopy.
In osteoarthritis...

There is another diabetic amputation every 30 seconds! They are now preventable. Today 15% of people with diabetic neuropathy will have an amputation. After 10 years of having diabetes 50% of people have symptoms of neuropathy that include pain, numbness, and loss of proprioception (balance). There is an epidemic of diabetic neuropathy and treatment...

Tennis elbow is a repetitive stress injury that results from improper stroke technique and occurs in the lateral epicondyle for backhands and the medial epicondyle for the serve and forehand. All too often the joint is treated with a cortisone injection and physical therapy and the person is told to return to playing tennis when the pain is resolved....

Infrared light therapy is perhaps the most impressive new scientific modality that spans many decades of medical breakthroughs. Its ability to improve or eliminate pain, often in minutes, is shocking. This treatment uses near infrared light to increase circulation, provide an increased supply of ATP (the energy to run the body), reduce inflammation, increase...

Infrared light therapy is a very powerful new technology that relieves pain from most conditions including neuropathic pain. The use of an infrared scanner to monitor skin thermal changes in real time is essential to achieve safe and effective treatment. This video gives examples of its application and the article below describes it. Its use in the treatment...

Overuse injuries such as achilles tendonitis heals twice as fast when using a low level laser therapy (this is the same as infrared light therapy or photonic stimulation). Studies published in the journal Sports Medicine report this. NASA studies show that the light penetrates about 10 inches and speeds up healing by about 50%. This light works by reducing inflammation,...

There is now a treatment for chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy that is being tested in a clinical trial. The results in clinical practice have been very promising in reducing pain, numbness and improving proprioception (balance). Dr. Len recently participated in a pilot study on treating diabetic neuropathy using infrared light therapy.
A...

Dr. Len and Nurse Vicki provide an extensive overview of pain management from the mainstream perspective and from that of complementary and alternative therapies. All drugs, even the over the counter medications, used for pain management have potential serious effects. So they are not ideal. Complications of NSAIDs are massive and should be taken off the market.

A study from Wake Forrest Baptist Medical Center published in the November 2012 issue of Brain and Behavior demonstrated that by balancing the electrical activity of the two sides of the brain, when they are out of balance, can enhance more normal sleeping patterns. This technique, called Brainwave Optimization or neurofeedback, can be accomplished...

Infrared light therapy increases circulation, speeds up healing by 50% according to NASA studies, increases lymphatic drainage, adds energy to the mitochondria, and calms down pain fibers. Treatment can be monitored in real time as it is delivered by the use of an infrared scanner, which is recommended. Many conditions are treatable with infrared light therapy.
